The job
The Water-Sensitive Infrastructure Planning working group at the Department Systemic Environmental Biotechnology seeks a highly driven scientist (f/m/x) who supports our team in the field of blue-green infrastructure planning.Jointly working in an international working group you will develop water infrastructure planning methods. Your work will be embedded in the UT-UBGI project and collaborate with colleagues from different Helmholtz centers.
The UT-UBGI project aims at a sustainable urban transformation through blue-green infrastructure and integrates different scientific disciplines and practice partners in a transdisciplinary approach. The aim is to quantify the effect of blue-green infrastructures on the functionality of urban greenery and its cooling potential. Results will be transferred to applicable planning solutions for cities and municipalities via spatial-economic infrastructure planning and the analysis of conflicts and narratives. The innovation of the project lies in the interdisciplinary integration of methods, the partnership with German model cities and the synthesis of the results to provide actionable insights for cities and municipalities in Germany.

Your tasks
- Development of blue-green infrastructure & water management scenarios
- Set up block-based water balances across different German municipalities (including rainfall runoff and irrigation modelling)
- Identify resource limitations for urban greening (space and irrigation water)
- Visualisation of the resulting scenarios in a web application
- Project management
- Acquisition of project funding
- Publication of scientific results in international peer reviewed journals

Your profile
- Experience (MSc or PhD) in the field of engineering, landscape architecture/ urban planning, computer science, natural & environmental sciences, or a related field
- Proficiency in programming (preferably Python)
- Experience in large data management
- Experience in web application (mapping) development is a plus
- Knowledge of storm water modelling (e.g. SWMM) is a plus
- A foundational grasp of urban water management and irrigation principles and modelling will be a plus
