Your tasks

The successful candidate is part of the SOILPROM Project. This Horizon Europe project aims to develop upgraded models to assess the impact of soil pollution by relevant pollutants on soil functions and related ecosystem services, supported by a qualitiative governance analysis towards healthy soils in Europe. Considered pollutants are heavy metals, pesticides, microplastics, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and nutrients of which a relevant selection should be included in the legal analysis.

The appointment is subject to the approval of the third-party funding provider.

The successful candidate will:

  • Compile a comprehensive overview of the relevant legal approaches at selected national, European and international policy level that influence soil use and are able to prevent and reduce soil pollution
  • Provide concrete proposals on how existing legislation can be developed more effectively
  • develop a set of recommendations for policymakers and use-cases stakeholders (i.e. land users)
  • Synthesise findings in an appropriate manner and contribute to international publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Contribute to the preparation of policy briefs.
  •  Join the SOILPROM project meetings
  • Help to organize a stakeholder workshop at Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research
  • Communication and dissemination of results to various audiences, from the scientific community at international conferences, to relevant stakeholders of SOILPROM and society

Your profile

  • PhD in law or political science
  • advanced knowledge/skills in European environmental law
  • English language proficiency
  • excellent team work and presenting capabilities in a multidisciplinary, international team
  • the following experiences are beneficial but not mandatory:
    • experiences in comparative law studies,
    • experience in publishing and presenting research findings in peer-reviewed journals and at scientific conferences,
    • other than English language skills, preferably German
