The Department of Effect-Directed Analysis at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is offering a:

PhD position (m/f)

Subject: Linking of chemical and effect-based monitoring to support comprehensive assessment of pollution in the Danube river basin

working time: 65 % (25,35 h / week); earliest startdate: 01.04.2019, limited to 3 years

Your tasks:

  • Development of monitoring schemes in agreement with but also complementing the upcoming Joint Danube Survey under the lead of ICPDR in summer 2019
  • Chemical analytical (LC-HRMS and GC-HRMS) and effect-based characterisation of water quality
  • Multivariate analysis of contamination patterns and toxicity profiles
  • Identification of drivers of toxicity using mass balance approaches and multivariate statistics

Your profile:

  • Master of science in environmental sciences, environmental or analytical chemistry, bio/chemo informatics or related studies
  • knowledge and experience in chemical analysis of organic environmental chemicals
  • good knowledge in handling large datasets and multivariate data analysis, experience in GIS-based approaches appreciated
  • knowledge in programming language R is appreciated
  • willingness to combine field, laboratory and computer work
  • enthusiasm for international and interdisciplinary work
  • good ability in English communication and writing
  • driving licence
