The German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) is a
National Research Centre located in the city of Leipzig and jointly
hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), the
Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), the University of Leipzig (UL),
and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). Its
central mission is to promote theory-driven synthesis and data-driven
theory in this emerging field. The concept of iDiv encompasses the
detection of biodiversity, understanding its emergence, exploring its
consequences for ecosystem functions and services, and developing
strategies to safeguard biodiversity under global change.
We 're seeking to fill a

PhD Position (m/f) – Ecosystem Services

working time 50 % (19.5h/week), fixed-term for 3 years

Your tasks:

  • Conduct ecosystem service research using earth observation data within the international project “ECOPOTENTIAL” with focus on habitats in European national parks under guidiance
  • Data-based documentation and statistical analyses of effects of land use, land use change on ecosystem services using earth observation data
  • Participatory conservation research project with citizen science aspects for ecosystem services research in close collaboration with ECOPOTENTIAL partners and other European organisations
  • Participation in regular iDiv workshops and seminars on biodiversity, contribution to international ecosystem service networks
  • High-quality scientific outputs in the form of journal publications and contribution to relevant high-level policy and practice reports

Your profile:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent university degree in
    environmental science, ecology, geosciences or equivalent in a relevant subject area linked to ecosystem service research
  • Knowledge of ecosystem service research desirable
  • Experience in the application of GIS analyses and statistical tools, strong organizational skills and personal responsibility
  • Experience with citizen science concepts and in scientific publications desirable
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Moreover, the ability to work, communicate and interact in an international collaborative consortium and ability to liaise with a variety of stakeholders is essential. Good command of German desirable.
